Our Senior Surveyor "Lucky", is a retired Navy Diver who honed his craft over a lifetime or working on vessels and ships. Aside from being a Graduate from Chapmans School of Seamanship, Lucky also holds a Coast Guard 100ton Masters License and worked with several commercial assist towing companies as a captain and diver for many years where he furthered his marine knowledge in commercial / recreational inspections, surveys, marine towing, salvage, and damage assessments.

Services provided

  •  Pre-Purchase Survey: This is the most extensive type of inspections, and is always recommended. During this type of survey the vessel will be completely inspected from: BOW TO STERN, PORT TO STARBOARD, TOP OF THE BRIDGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE KEEL, AND EVERYTING IN-BEWEEN TO INCLUDE: A  HAUL OUT INSPECTION AND A TRAIL RUN TO TEST ALL SYSTEMS IN REAL TIME AND UNDER LOAD, AND (OR) SAIL. This survey evaluates the overall condition of the vessel with focus on: structural integrity, electrical systems, propulsion system, fuel system, auxiliary machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, running/standing rigging and sails (Note, rigging is only visually inspected up to eye level) and overall maintenance. In addition to everything previously mentioned the vessel is also appraised to form a Fair Market Value (FMV) assessment as she sits at the time of the survey.
  •  Insurance Survey: This assessment is usually performed on a vessel that you already own and is used to verify the overall condition and value where the insurance company can make a determination of whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk, and value. Insurance providers are primarily focused on the overall condition and safety standard compliance for the vessels intended use. Insurance companies generally require surveys of older boats every five years, as well as verifying the vessel's Fair Market Value (FMV) in its current condition.  (At this time we can not perform insurance surveys on vessels older than 2005.)
  • Cargo / Equipment / Container Inspections. We can be your eyes on the ground to asses the equipment after it has been offloaded. We also offer long term inspection plans for continual monitoring of equipment.
  • Oil Samples: This is one on the best and least intrusive tests that can be completed during a survey to inspect the internal conditions of the engines and generators. A small volume of lubricant is collected from the marine engine(s), transmission(s), and generator(s) and then overnighted to a laboratory for processing. The oil is then analyzed and tested for contaminates that can provide valuable information about metal wear, and a general operational condition of the engine.
  • Engine diagnostics: Model and year dependent, Colonial Marine Surveyors has the equipment needed to read the engines computers and retrieve important data such as: total run hours, hours at RPM'S, faults, fault codes, as well as the ability to test fuel, and electronic systems. Compression readings are also available. Mercury, MerCruiser, Evinrude, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda.
